HYSTORICAL BACKGROUND
At the beginning of the sixties, Triumph aimed to put into production a new car that could counter the strong success that were having the Austin-Healey Sprite and the MG Midget.
After the success of the Herald, drawn almost by chance and in the blink of an eye by Giovanni Michelotti, Triumph decided to ask again to the stylist from Turin to define the new spyder.
Michelotti again amazed everyone with a new masterpiece and the prototype presented in 1962 at the Earls Court in London received unanimous approval.
The engine was the already known 4-cylinder in-line with lateral camshaft of 1147cc of Herald derivation, which thanks to the 2-carburettor power supply developed a maximum power of 63hp.
This new spyder officially started production only in 1964 and the name Spitfire was chosen in honor of the Royal Air Force warplanes, which, during the Second World War, defeated the German air force avoiding the Nazi invasion.
Already after just one year were made the first changes: a modified front grille, door handles with lock on both sides, carpet floor and upholstered seats.
The engine, thanks to a new camshaft and modified exhaust system, gained 4cv (for a total of 67cv).
It was a lucky model that had 5 restyling and remained in production until 1980.
